Museums Need Change.
Museums have been receiving backlash and criticism from workers, audience, and community members about how they are not inclusive and diverse in their institutions. When museums do start progressing towards a more inclusive environment, they need to consistently work towards this, not just when they are receiving backlash.
The Three Museum Steps
Speak out.
One way museums can begin to become more inclusive and diverse is by speaking out, not only about the social and political issues in their community, but about their own institution and what needs to be changed…
Make a plan.
Museums need to make attainable plans and take actual steps towards fighting racism and acknowledging the institutionalized racism within their own museum…
Action!
Some museums are taking immediate action to help change the narratives told at their institutions from hiring new staff to selling art…
What YOU Can Do
You are the visitor. You have the power.
1. Be Aware
The museum field is always changing, so staying updated on new developments is key. Organizations such as the American Alliance of Museums and the Museum as Site for Social Action Organization constantly have updates and op-eds about museums, as well as very helpful resources.
2. Spread the Word
Tell your peers, friends, and family about museum reformation! The issues of museum institutions are not well known outside of the museum field. You can promote accounts such as @changethemuseum, who posts people’s personal experiences of working in museums.
3. Know Your Guidelines
As the visitors and audience of museums, we have the power to choose the museums we visit. Taking that little extra step to look into the museums you are supporting, is crucial. Answers these questions to help you create your museum guidelines.
